Are You Ready for e-Manifest?
December 26, 2013
There are many emerging trends in sustainability, but one of the simplest to tackle is digitalization. Â Digitalization simply requires that records are kept digitally rather than physically. Â And while this has been going on within private institutions for some time, the EPA is finally trying to catch up – and that benefits you through the e-manifest.
Last year, President Obama signed into law the Hazardous Waste Electronic Manifest Establishment Act, which directs that by 2015, the EPA must come up with a systematic plan to move from paper-based to digital documents for all of its records. This national system is referred to as e-Manifest, and extends to all federally- and state-regulated wastes requiring manifests.
The e-Manifest will allow waste generators the more convenient and cost-effective option of completing manifests online, as well as the ability to facilitate the tracking of shipments and provide confirmations that shipments have been received. Â It will also help to dramatically lessen the inefficiencies of physical records by centralizing the data electronically.
To get ready for e-Manifest, you can either check the e-Manifest website regularly, or join e-Manifest ListServ.  The e-Manifest ListServ is an open forum for news, information, and discussion relating to the e-Manifest program.  You can subscribe by sending a blank e-mail to: eManifest-subscribe@lists.epa.gov.
